Katy Perry released her second single, Unconditionally, for radio play on October 16.  It proves she knows how to decipher between singles and promotional singles.  Dark Horse and Walking on Air were good, but they didn’t have what it takes to be hits.  Unconditionally does.

The power ballad is about her ex-husband, Russell Brand, allowing Katy Perry to give her most emotional performance in a song yet.  Unconditionally is filled with heart-string-tugging lyrics.  “Oh no, did I get too close? / Oh, did I almost see? / What’s really on the inside / All your insecurities / All the dirty laundry / Never made me blink one time…So come just as you are to me / Don’t need apologies / Know that you are all worthy / I’ll take your bad days with your good / Walk through the storm I would / I do it all because I love you / I love you…Open up your heart / Acceptance is the key to be / To be truly free / Will you do the same for me?…I will love you / I will love you / I will love you unconditionally.”  These lyrics are beautiful and the best of the PRISM singles and promotional singles thus far.  It is some of Perry’s best writing based on her entire career.  You can hear the emotion ringing in Perry’s voice as she belts out the heartfelt words.  It is not a bubbly, catchy pop song.  It is the serious, mature sound Perry was referring to when she called PRISM a “darker” album than previous records.

The highly emotional power ballad Unconditionally is guaranteed to strike a chord with a massive chunk of the population that hears it.  Buy it.
